چکیده

Localization of cortical activity is important in surgical planning for the approach and treatment of neoplasms, vascular malformations, and epilepsy (1). At present direct physiologic assessment (using intraoperative stimulation or recording techniques) is necessary to accurately identify cortical function because direct visual anatomical identification may be inaccurate (1-4). The accuracy of electrical (EEG) and magnetic (magnetoencephalography (MEG)) recordings in the preoperative localization of the hand sensorimotor cortex has been compared to intracerebral recordings in patients with complex partial seizures (1). We report the success of magnetic source imaging (MSI) using the combined techniques of MEG and magnetic resonance (MR) in the noninvasive preoperative localization of the hand sensorimotor cortex for surgical guidance in two cases.

Different Profiles of Verbal and Nonverbal Auditory Impairment in Cortical and Subcortical Lesions

A B S T R A C T Introduction:We investigated differential role of cortical and subcortical regions in verbal and non-verbal sound processing in ten patients who were native speakers of Persian with unilateral cortical and/or unilateral and bilateral subcortical lesions and 40 normal speakers as control subjects. Methods: The verbal tasks included monosyllabic, disyllabic dichotic and diotic tas...

Subdural and Depth Electrode Placement in the Brain for Validation of MEG in Partial Epilepsy

Localization of epileptogenic zones in extratemporal epilepsy is a challenging problem. We speculate that using all modalities of data in an optimal way can facilitate the localization of these zones. In this paper, we propose the following steps to transfer all modalities of data in a single reference coordinate system: 1) Segmentation of subdural and depth electrodes, and cortical surface. 2)...

Restoration of Visual Field following MEG-guided tumor resection

The planning of treatment for structural lesions of the brain is facilitated by knowledge of the function of surrounding brain tissue. Mapping of function preoperatively helps to choose a surgical route to minimize neurologic deficits and define the limits of lesion resectability [1,2]. It also helps in preoperative counseling of the patient regarding the inherent risks. Direct cortical stimula...

Noninvasive localization procedures in ectopic hyperfunctioning parathyroid tumors.

In primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT), parathyroidectomy is the treatment of choice, but anatomic variations of ectopic glands may cause surgical failure. Reliable preoperative noninvasive localization procedures would have a positive impact on the operative time and increase recovery rate. We retrospectively evaluated 186 patients with pHPT who were studied before successful parathyroidectomy ...

Parathyroid adenoma Localization

Background: Bilateral neck exploration is the gold standard for parathyroid adenoma localization in primary hyperparathyroidism. But surgeons do not have adequate experience for accurate surgical exploration and new methods are developed for surgery like unilateral exploration and minimally invasive surgery, thus, preoperative localization could reduces time and stress in surgical performance....
